Tubal Ligation

Permanent contraception - tubal ligation for women - is an excellent option for people who:

  • have all the children they want or can provide for;
  • are tired of using (or cannot use) temporary methods of birth control;
  • are looking for a safe, convenient way to prevent pregnancy; or
  • want a birth control method that is virtually foolproof and easy to obtain.

How is it done?

A medical examination and counseling session are provided at the Planned Parenthood clinic.  The surgery takes place at Presbyterian Hospital Outpatient Surgery Center.  General anethesica is used, and a small incision is made near the navel.  A slender lighted viewing instrument (laparascope) is inserted.  The fallopian tubes are then blocked through this instrument.  The procedure takes about 30 minutes.

Tubal Ligations at Planned Parenthood:

  • are performed by licensed, experienced physicians;
  • usually do not require that you take more than one day off work;
  • have no effect on sexual functioning or performance;
  • are safe, confidential, and affordable; and
  • provide freedom from worry about unwanted pregnancy.

How much does it cost?

The price of a tubal ligation at Planned Parenthood of Central Oklahoma is much lower than that offered by many other providers!  Fees are based on your family size and income.

Tubal ligation fees at Planned Parenthood are between $1,200 and $1,500.  The fees include a pre-procedure interview, tubal ligation, and follow-up tests.  Part or all of the costs of permanent contraception may be covered by Medicaid or by private health insurance.  Planned Parenthood accepts VISA, MasterCard, Discover, and American Express, and we submit to most insurance carriers.

If I'm ready or want more information, what do I do?

Call Planned Parenthood of Central Oklahoma at 405-528-0221, toll free at 1-800-230-PLAN or by email.  A specialist in permanent contraception is available to answer your questions, send you more information, and make appointments.

Remember:  Although tubal ligation is very effective in preventing pregancy, they offer no protection from sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including HIV.  Latex or plastic condoms and abstinence are the only methods of birth control that can significantly reduce the risk of getting an STI.
