Cancer Screening/ PAP, COLPO, CRYO and LEEP
Cervical cancer is one of the most common cancers. Prior to the development of routine use of the Pap test, cervical cancer was the leading cause of death from cancer in American women. Today, more than half of the women who die from cervical cancer have never been screened with a Pap test. Colposcopy PPCO purchased a colposcope in 1995. It is used to diagnose a pre-cancerous condition of the cervix (usually called "dysplasia"). This allows us to provide our clients with a continuity of care, from an abnormal Pap smear, to the subsequent need for further diagnostic care and treatment. The colposcope is a special, high power microscope used to examine the cervix and vaginal walls for abnormalities. It can identify pre-cancerous conditions often five to ten years before actual cancer cells develop. If pre-cancerous cells are identified, the next step is treatment. Cryotherapy and LEEP Cryotherapy is a treatment which freezes some of the tissue of the cervix, thereby removing abnormal cells and preventing the development of cervical cancer. PPCO offers this service to clients as part of our continuing commitment to reproductive and sexual health. In 2002, PPCO received a grant to purchase a LEEP machine. This machine is another way to remove abnormal cells to prevent cervical cancer. It electronically removes abnormal tissue. Dr. Frank Wilson, PPCO Medical Director, provides this "specialty" service. |
